The Bike Whisperer
By MARDI-LOUISE
No history of the XT Girls would be complete, without a nod to our (now ex) Bike Whisperer.
Nerves of steel, patience of a saint and long suffering as husband and live-in bike fixer/tuner/hauler/kick starter and then as the XT Girls’s tutor and mechanic – the man is a legend.
He famously tuned my DR600 Dakar to such perfection, that I could kick start it myself first time. And if you visit any newsgroup for these beasts, you will know that there are very few that don’t leave their owners in despair with the difficulty in starting.
Every bike I’ve dragged home, or insisted that we SIMPLY MUST own, has passed through his magical hands and ended up running like bats from hell.
An old KMX125 which we got for free, cos it was such a rat and not running… a week’s swearing, knocking about and bad moods coming from the shed… and eh presto: one dirty, green monster emerged, kicked into action first time and went like lightning across the fields and quarries. We sold it after many months of terrifying joy for £650. And I didn’t even lie on the advert, I swear!
At any one time, master of around 7 bikes, ranging from 20 year old 1100 V-twin cruisers, to a spanking new plastic and carbon fibre GSXR600 (and one Chinese import too!) maintaining and keeping them running – and the man never even had a garage to do it in!
Add to that 15 years of skydiving knowledge and over 3,000 jumps – and the best chili-con-carne chef on the planet and you can see why we were sad to see him go.
Regrettably, the strain of marriage to an XT Girl proved far too much in the end, and our Bike Whisperer finally hung up his volt meter and got the hell out.
Here’s to you, Tom C. It was good while it lasted!
May you find peace and happiness on your journey, our bikes will miss you.
